Fever Dream – December 2021

“Fever Dream” is the new name for the theme-based song contest, and we’re having another one! With how hectic everything is right now, you have two weeks to make your submission.
Details:

Prize:

  • No prizes other than having fun and learning how to wreak havoc.

Eligibility:

  • Anyone who makes an entry that follows the stated rules is included (we reserve the right to exclude anything that may give us any legal or financial problems, of course, and solely by our discretion).

Rules:

Time:

  • Participants will have 2 weeks to compose a noise/experimental piece based on the given theme.
  • Contest begins Friday, December 3rd 2021, ends Friday, December 17th, at 11:59PM
  • The compilation video(s) will go up that weekend, depending on how long it takes to compile.

Theme:

  • Choose one of the following (per submission, multiple submission welcome)
    • Alien birth sequence.
    • Quiet please.
    • It was a good idea at the time.

Usage of theme:

  • The theme must either appear in your piece at some point (it is up to the listener to recognize it, but your job to make it recognizable somehow) or form the structure of the entire piece.
    • Your interpretation of the theme is what matters here.

Composition:

  • There are two  categories this time, so anyone can join in. Choose one of the following two:
    • INM as primary sound source.
      • Extra cred for INM + EXP only.
      • Those without an INM may use an IMP for extra-infernal divinity points.
    • Your choice of primary sound source, regardless of brand (If you do not have an INM or IMP).
      • Must be an analog modular sound source
        • A guitar or other electric instrument (i.e., with a pickup or transducer) is close enough.
  • Max. 2 external modulation sources.
    • Except for the case of IMP-only; use as many as you can patch in.
  • Max. 4 discrete patches, live patching is unlimited.
    • A patch is a completed routing setup. Stopping recording to change your routing counts as one patch.
    • Live patching is changing routing while recording.
  • 1-2 effects (stereo does not count as an effect).
    • For this  contest, an effect  is something external that you send your audio through to change how it sounds. Internal filters (such as those in the INM) do not count.
    • You can use as many Plague Bearers as you can access.
  • No sampling or post processing
  • Minimum length of 3 minutes.

Submitting:

  • I will need access to the files to post on the f(h) YouTube channel. Audio-only is fine, but please include it in a video wrapper (MP4, MKV, whatever). Mono audio is fine, but please save it as stereo to avoid one-speaker output. Keep levels at or below 0dB please.
  • It does not have to be professional quality, just try to get the best audio recording you can with whatever means you have – even a cell phone, just be careful with your placement and levels.
  • All patches must be documented and explained. Please list all modules used and their purpose. Brief explanations are fine, just let us know what to what and why for each connection.

Emergency Sale!

Prices updated 22, Nov. 2021

INM-D Preorder pricing is now:

All other prices below have been reduced as well.

Please contact me at flight (at) (this website url) to make a purchase, or via the contact page.

  • The eurorack Infernal Noise Machine (INM-E) are available for preorder again, for $666. Preorder meaning they are not built, but I have all the long-leadtime components in stock right now, and will build yours after the order is placed. 3 are now in stock, ready to go.
  • Plague Bearer (PB-1E) r4.2 module, $90 each. I have three assembled units and can build seven more. SOLD OUT (But I ordered parts to make more. I’ll post a notice when it arrives.)

Kits! These have not been kitted yet, but all pieces are in stock. Please allow a week to throw everything together. They are full kits, with panel. Apparently I forgot to make web pages for them too… Here’s a picture of the contents of the SoS-K:

Sound of Shadows Kit contents.

  • Plague Bearer Kit (PB-K) – $60, 8 available.
  • Sound of Shadows Kit (SoS-K) – $95, 11 available.

I found these surprises wrapped in bubblewrap in a buried box, Completed subassemblies of two Quad Plague Bearers, leftover from the final run, numbered 9 and 10. #10 is even a special one. I splattered the front and back panels with blood, then applied a protective polyurethane layer (which made the painted serial number run, but it adds to the effect). It doesn’t show up as nicely on the black graphics as I’d wanted, but it is my blood, and it is the only one like it. These are not discounted because I wasn’t going to sell them at all, but food money takes priority, alas. They need final assembly and testing, but all components are on hand. Each includes a 120VAC-12VAC @ 500mA US power adapter.

  • QPB Final Run #9: $350 Sold!
  • QPB Blood-Splattered Final Run #10: $666 Sold!

Other stuff I found hidden in boxes that are on sale:

INM-D preorders open!

The Desktop Infernal Noise Machine – INM-D – is now available for preorder! Preorder period ends December 31st.

(prototype panel shown, final will be 0.090″ satin Metalphoto aluminum)

Pricing  (USD):

Blood Box road case: $2,740.00
-Material: Black Walnut (see note), stained, nickel-plated hardware.
-Dimensions: 20″W x 10″H x 7″D (closed)
-Weight: ~13lbs.

Minimal case: $2,490.00 (No hardware or stain, just four feet and a protective top coat.)
-Material: Black Walnut (see note)
-Dimensions: 20″W x 9″H x 4.5″D
-Weight: ~10lbs.

*Note: Case sides are solid black walnut. Top & bottom are Black walnut plywood for dimensional stability (so the box won’t split due to temperature or humidity fluctuation).

Both include a US AC adapter (12VAC 1500mA, 5.5mm x 2.1mm). For international orders, deduct $20 from the price and I will locate a compatible adapter in or near your country that you can order, if needed. Blood Box also includes the related tiedowns, anti-vibration pad, and leather strap.

Free Options :

Jacks (choose one): 1/4″, 3.5mm, banana. For banana, let me know your preferred color scheme.  A ground jack will also be added in the top right of the panel.

Minimal case:

For the finish coat, choose either a gloss polyurethane or a satin-ish wax. The poly really brings out the grain and color and protects the wood very well, while the wax gives a soft and warm tone to the wood and is (in my opinion) much more pleasant to the touch.

Add-ons:

Storage pouches:

  1. 8″W x 4″H: $55
  2. 13.5″W x 3.25″H: $60
  3. 8″W x 7″H: $65
  4. 5.5″W x 3.25″H: $50

Basic combinations: 1 A and 1B, 1 C and 1 D, 1 A and 2 D. (A&B shown)

Tie down points (Footman loops): $5 each, let me know how you’d like them arranged.

Custom pouches and straps available, just ask!

Ordering:
Send me an email with the details, requests, and any questions, for your order at flight (at) flightofharmony (dot) com.
Payment will be via Paypal.

Other words:

This is limited to a maximum of 35 units. These are something I have always wanted to do, so I’m going to do them, but I probably will not do something this big again any time soon. I have a number of smaller modules I want to do next.

These will all be hand-made and assembled by just me, flight, with my usual OCD attentiveness.

Production will take 6-8 months.  During this time I will post regular updates – monthly,  at first, bi-weekly as things progress – but you are free to inquire and mildly harass me any time you may feel the need.

More images and videos will be appearing in the coming month in several places:

Hello again!

The Infernal Noise Machine Kickstarter has finally ended. The goal was not met, but there were enough backers willing to change their pledges to orders so we can go ahead and make them anyway. We had hoped to get enough backers to have some production model units built for stock, but that’s OK. The Limited Edition units were the main focus. Kickstarter was an interesting experience and we’ll probably use it again in the future with the same intent of building the module regardless. It’s a good platform and could be a lot of fun if done the right way. Thanks again to everyone for joining in!

There was enough time during the campaign to get the final details worked out on the eurorack INM and we are now starting the Limited Edition production run. There are only 13 of the LE units left and this is the only time they will be built, so grab one while you can! The INM-Exp expander module is being built as well. More information on both available on the Kickstarter page.  (I’ll get the pages up on the website as soon as I can.)

Pre-order pricing:

INM-E:             $777.00 + shipping

INM-Exp:         $80.00 + shipping

After production, prices go to MSRP:

INM-E:             $949.00 + shipping

INM-Exp:         $125.00 + shipping

Desktop & 5U Infernal Noise Machine

Development of the Desktop and 5U Infernal Noise Machine resumes after INM-E production ends. You can follow updates and discussions of the INM-D in the thread at Muff’s.

Best wishes to everyone, take care!

Desktop INM status

We’ve received a few inquiries about the desktop INM:

The original desktop Infernal Noise Machine is discontinued, but a new one based on the upgraded and expanded INM-E module is in the works. A 5U version is also planned.

We’re busy with the INM-E Kickstarter right now, but work on the desktop and 5U variants will resume afterward. Announcements will be posted here, twitter, and in the f(h) forum on Muffwiggler when there is news.

INM-E Kickstarter!

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Regardless, we are back and trying something new: a Kickstarter campaign to fund production of the INM-E module. Please join in and help spread the word!

We’re pleased to announce that the Plague Bearer is once again available in kit form through Modular Addict and Thonk.

Ready your soldering iron and bar the workroom door – for the Plague Bearer kit screams once more.
